All The While

when we were on, i dug a heel and quit dancing in the bar room with 'em all night
but then you cut me loose -- i'm walking into the fire
a man can find religion in a baggy or a vial, i would've rather had you with me all the while
salvation stands not to be much of a use
my heavenly home is still hell without you
you weren't with my cut, you liked your own and held other men up with it
i loved you like you knew my head wasn't right
i would've rather had you with me keeping on the sunny side
now the desperate man in me wont be hard to find
i kept crying out -- if my wanton heart could find you, its been you all the while

stuck a palm into denim before i leapt right out to tell ‘em
I’m not leaving this world till i die
listen hard for the voices — it took four iron horses before i could testify
I’m not making my peace with the lord — I’m not your merciful one
the ringing still rings, I’m pissing through a machine, I’m spending one more night with all the girls that I’ve seen
wish this cotton would breathe, wish these wounds were licked clean, wish the blood would turn red and not black like its been
money can buy you some time but money can’t buy you life
I’m not your merciful one

Losing Light

i didn’t mind you, you had something i liked
now i get home, everyone seems to
we used to kick off our shoes at the first sign of the rain
now I’m sewing up my eyes at dawn
cause i heard you were sweet on some other john
and thought about taking your love on the road
losing light with you is glacial, I’m still shaking out the shame
of coming down off a day in bed still wondering where my hat will hang
i’ll wait like an open flame and stay lit for the way you say my name
when you went cold i was down in the ditch
of a shady few weeks and the poor fool’s bliss
so i took out a loan from the man at the station
and went where the sun wasn’t missing
and called you from some orange grove

Feelin' Low

he came to town in a coverall now its seven days bespoke
my boss denied my raise today, my girls been staying with her folks
everyone’s got something that you thought that you were promised
they’ll still be minting money, silver spoons, and black boot polish
feeling’ low
they get a whole life wrapped in bliss and linen, while I’m choking down what i was given
their towers gleam and their ethics lean so i put a fence around my garden
I’m trying out my new friends caustic as the guns that arm ‘em
when everyones got something that you thought that you were promised, you’re gonna have to take it from ‘em boys -- let’s keep ‘em honest
my girl left me for a warmer fire so I’m wrenching down on what i’ve acquired
now i’m quiet most of the time i watched the loud ones lose their promise
I’m cruising through my days and firing off at night in the comments
everyones got something that you thought that you were promised
I’ve been down too long to find hope
